This weekend, my sister-in-law came to visit. Reba is one of her favorite singers, and it just-so-happened that Reba was playing at the Houston Rodeo on Friday. So we (along with my friend Crystal and her bf - it was her birthday) decided to go. First of all, the Houston Rodeo is a month long event that brings in acts from country, to pop, to rock, to Disney stars, and so on… so it is an event for everyone. Secondly, there’s one event i find particularly entertaining to watch called Mutton Busting - children hold on to a sheep as long as they can while the sheep runs as fast as it can. Very funny!
As I said before in my Rodeo BBQ Cook-off post (http://www.southernchicstyle.tumblr.com/), I’m not a cowgirl. But, I do own a pair of cowboy boots since it was popular when I was in college to wear them with denim skirts. And, I always pull them out for my one or two visits to the rodeo each year. For Friday’s festivities, it was “Wear pink to the Rodeo” day for breast cancer awareness (even the guys wore pink to support the cause). Given this bit of information and the amount of rain we received in Houston Friday afternoon, I had the PERFECT trench! I bought the trench at Banana Republic a year or so ago and was overjoyed to wear it for the purpose a trench really serves, not to mention - I love it. :) Worn over a grey mock turtleneck with my go-to J Brand skinnies, a bright scarf (also from Banana Republic), my cowboy boots, and Marc Jacobs crossbody bag, the BR trench was the perfect accent piece for the cold, rainy night. I brought along my Burberry umbrella for the time spent outside, and I needed it! Inside, we walked around and saw what seems to be the ever expanding menu of random fried items. New this year - deep fried Red Velvet Cake and deep fried Oatmeal Cream Pies… those just added to the list of heart attack inducing fried foods like twinkies, oreos, and… wait for it…. butter. Yes, butter. While I didn’t partake in the fried craziness, I did have a delicious Chopped BBQ sandwich and some Marble Slab ice cream (heaven!). There were numerous vendors selling their wares, lots of livestock to see, and wine, beer, and other drinks to consume while viewing it all.
Reba was good. I’m familiar with some of her music, but her footwear had my attention from the start. She was wearing some AWESOME black thigh high boots with rhinestones or something sparkly running from the top to the bottom on the back of the boots. She looked great! If I were a singer performing at the rodeo, I would own those boots (or something like them) for sure! I always enjoying seeing what the droves of spectators wear to the rodeo. You get anything from everyday casual to decked out in cowboy/cowgirl garb - rhinestone pearl snap shirts, fringe jackets, the latest cowboys boots, fancy cowboy hats, and so on. I enjoy putting my own spin on cowgirl-chic and seeing what I can come up with. If you ever want to dress like a cowgirl, this is the time. It’s fun to do, but make it your own.

- Friday I also visited David Peck’s studio to pick up my Janvier dress in Spanish Moss. I was able to see some of the garments from Spring 2012 being created right in front of me! And, I got to chat with David and some of his team before they headed off to Aspen for today’s showing at Aspen Fashion Week!
